Bruns Eco Village Vision

Our vision is to foster a thriving and regenerative world of inclusive community living options where we can live, work and learn.

Bruns Eco Village Mission

Our mission is to create and sustain an eco village in Brunswick Heads that respects the natural habitat, provides housing security, offers a lifelong learning environment and empowers ethical, economic vibrancy.

Our Governance Structure

We have seen that unclear leadership and governance can be the undoing of a project and a community. Which is why we explored various governance structures early on in the process of creating Bruns Eco Village.

Our working group meetings began around shared meals and continued that way for several months creating a non-hierarchical atmosphere of friendliness that we were keen to conitnue.

In early 2017 we decided to adopt dynamic governance (also known as sociocracy) as a method of governance.

What is dynamic governance?

Dynamic governance is a non-authoritarian system that empowers people within an organisation to make decisions within their established domains. It uses a system of semi-autonomous circles where everyone involved with the eco village has an input into creating policies that relate to their particular domain. The circle structure benefits from the fact that insights gained in one area of the project can accelerate understanding and discoveries in other areas.

Dynamic governance in action

From the very first training we trialled dynamic governance within the core group (or meta circle in dynamic governance parlance) and as that proved successful we have expanded that governance structure to include other people and groups (or circles) as the project progresses. Each circle has two representatives that meet with representatives of other circles.

Round table discussions are held on every important subject which makes for rich and interesting meetings. One of the refreshing things about holding a meeting under a dynamic governance structure is that every voice is heard. It eliminates the hijacking of a meeting by one or two dominant voices and empowers the quieter members of the group to include themselves.

The current structure

The organisational chart above shows the dynamic governance structure for the current phase of the Bruns Eco Village's development. This structure will be modified to include the eco village co-operative once the land has been bought by the co-operative.
